Artist Biography and Artist Statement
Karen is a successful, award-winning graphic designer and watercolor artist. Her understanding of design concepts and color relationships, as used in advertising and publishing, applies to her watercolor paintings. Since 2016 Karen has been taking watercolor classes and workshops, and has exhibited her work from Spokane and the surrounding areas to the west side of Washington State.
Mostly inspired by nature, Karen’s watercolor paintings reflect her interest in remote places in the outdoors, as experienced on hiking and bike trails, as well as parks and botanical gardens. Watercolor paintings are the expressive vehicles she uses to relay the joy surrounding those experiences.
Using the elements of design in the graphic arts taught me the importance of thoughtful, well-planned compositions. Even though my paintings are representational, rather than painting objects, I focus on seeing the abstract quality of the interaction between positive and negative shapes. I am purposeful in the use of complementary colors, color temperatures and values to express what I want to convey in my watercolor paintings.
