JUNE AKIN

ARTIST BIO:
I was introduced to the world of art as a young child by an elderly English art teacher, Miss Toppin-Brown, who had a beautiful glass-roofed studio which occupied the top floor of the building my father worked in in Canada where I grew up. I took art lessons from her for six years. Watercolors were my favorite medium and of course her English style, using very soft colors.
I took art classes in school and achieved several Scholastic Art Awards including a Gold Key for the State of Washington Regional Scholastic Exhibition and a scholarship to Chouinard Art Institute in South Pasadena upon graduation from High School. Such were the times, being seventeen years old, my parents did not think a young lady should be turned loose in California to pursue a career in art and I ended up using my left brain, reluctantly, as an accounting clerk to support the necessities in life. After retiring and finally having spare time decided to revisit my first love, art, entering into the ACT 2 programs. It was quite an exciting adventure rediscovering a lost talent and all the new art materials to play with.

ARTIST STATEMENT:
My paintings are inspired by the world around me, landscapes and cityscapes along with social causes and human interests and also, a few animals which I find very challenging
Watercolors are always driving me forward, reaching for that perfect combination of paint and the right technique I can consistently rely upon which seems to be always just out of reach, thus one more painting beckons to be created.
