Growing up in the Pacific Northwest and with a degree in landscape architecture, observing nature and its natural processes is ingrained into Pat’s psyche. From a young age she has always been involved in art. Combining her two interests of art and the natural environment came together in the medium of watercolor painting. Her first water classes were at the local art store, and later followed with workshops from local and internationally recognized painters.
Artist Statement I am a landscape painter driven by the dynamics of color. I fell in love with the Fauvists and their abstract shapes of color many years ago. My approach is to see the unique shapes, patterns and relationships. I want to express the sense of place and share my emotional response to that place.
Five years ago I decided to focus specifically on watercolor painting because of the challenge of the medium. Learning to manipulate color pigment with the element of water is fascinating, ever challenging and thrilling. As I continue to grow as a painter I’ve moved into plein air work and this has added another dimension. Now I’m truly involved in the immediate environment of sun, wind, heat, cold.
