Elena Von Derau
Bio
I am a self-taught artist who lives in Deer Park, WA, with my husband, Matt, and my two adorable golden retrievers. I enjoy a multi-disciplinary approach to art which includes photography, graphite, acrylic, digital, and watercolor. Watercolor is my bread-and-butter. My artwork is strongly influenced by over two decades of experience with wild and captive birds of prey through my years as a licensed falconer, a licensed raptor rehabilitator, and as an agricultural bird abatement contractor flying falcons over the fruit farms of central WA. I have won prior recognition in the field of digital, watercolor, and photography, a fact which still boggles my mind. In 2013, my photograph, “Surprise Fly By”, was featured by National Geographic’s Your Shot, Smithsonian Magazine Online, and the Today Show. I started entering juried exhibitions in 2025 and have been accepted into many more than I ever expected among artists whose talent I greatly admire. I have drawn and doodled with pencil and paper my entire life, but since adding color, it feels like the horizon has become endless.
Artist Statement
I strive with every painting to connect my passion for wildlife and my passion for art. I believe a little bit of chaos is healthy for the soul, and I think that shows in my paintings sometimes. With watercolor, I prefer to add as much texture as I can with techniques, granulating pigments, or happy accidents. I'll even bring out the razer blade and scratch up the paper if I think it needs something a little extra. In general, I start with a plan and areas I know need to be finely detailed, but then I just paint where the water wants to go even if it's nowhere near where I started. My motto in art and life is to have fun and know it'll all work out in the end!
