Gay Witherspoon

Bio
Raised near harbors and beaches in a house in the woods, I drew and painted as a child. Colorado College, where I majored in studio art, provided more education and tempting landscapes.Spokane and the Inland Northwest have been home for over forty years now, and is where my husband and I raised our family and where I was introduced to watercolor painting. Taking classes and workshops from locally and nationally known artists, as well as participating in Spokane Watercolor Society, have increased my skills and provided stimulation. For the last decade and more my artwork could be seen in SWS shows and shows of my own in Spokane.
Artist Statement
Drawing and painting are acts of observation, learning and creation for me. If playing a musical instrument is largely learning how to hear, painting may be learning how to see. Beyond seeing, however, creating art is thinking, selecting and trying to capture the essence of the subject that moved me to paint it. It is both analytical and subjective. The challenge of the watercolor medium and the way it captures color and light make it my medium of choice.
