Nina Marie Altman

Bio
After 38 years in health care and 2 years as an Environmental Health and Safety Specialist in western Washington, Nina retired in 2021 and moved with her husband to Spokane. Although art has been a part of Nina’s life since childhood, it was not until relocation that she has been able to spend more time painting subjects in eastern Washington and northern Idaho. Nina’s education includes a BS in Physiotherapy, an MEd. in Education, and an MS in Engineering. She has also held a Seattle Boiler Engineer’s license, Shipyard Competent certification and Designated Engineer position aboard SS Virginia V. Away from painting, Nina enjoys playing with her two grandchildren, singing, studying Irish Gaelic, and “re-wildling” garden spaces on her Certified Wildlife Habitat property.
Artist Statement
Although I am currently focused on watercolor painting, I have also had the good fortune to study calligraphic art from many talented instructors and practitioners in the United States and Europe. Since my arrival in Spokane, I have studied with Stan Miller and currently maintain membership in the Spokane Calligraphy Guild and Spokane Watercolor Society. My watercolor painting style is realistic and inspired by the natural forms and colors of earth and sea. My subjects range from birds and flowers in natural settings, to common objects, historical and maritime subjects, and lost or forgotten places. I am endlessly intrigued by the beauty and abundance of natural subjects in Spokane, Coeur d’Alene, and the Palouse, as well as the maritime scenes of Puget Sound.
